Worton Scar

The woodland at Worton Scar, just outside Leyburn, is one of those Yorkshire spots that rewards a proper explore without demanding much planning. You're looking at mixed forest - decent walking terrain with enough shade to make a sticky day bearable. The paths wind through fairly standard moorland woodland, the sort where you'll spot the occasional bench placed by someone who clearly appreciated a quiet sit-down.

It's the kind of place walkers genuinely enjoy rather than tourists ticking boxes. The forest itself isn't dramatic - no ancient yews or rare species to speak of - but it's atmospheric in a low-key way. You'll find decent views across the surrounding valleys if you pick the right spots, and the paths link reasonably well to other walking routes in the area. Allow two to three hours if you're taking your time; less if you're just after a brisk loop.

Families with older kids will manage fine. Pushchairs? Probably not ideal depending on which path you take. It's best visited when the ground isn't waterlogged - autumn's usually solid, spring can be boggy. The forest doesn't demand entry fees or booking as far as anyone can tell, so you can just turn up.

If you're staying at one of the nearby campsites - Cherish Glamping or Stablefell Holidays are both within four miles - this makes a straightforward morning walk before heading into Leyburn for lunch. It's not the dramatic high moorland you'll find elsewhere in the Dales, but it's proper Yorkshire woodland without the crowds.
