World Distance Direction Sign

You'll find this curious Victorian-era signpost standing on the moors above Whitby, pointing the way to virtually everywhere on Earth. It's the sort of thing that stops you dead in your tracks - a proper oddity that makes you wonder what possessed someone to plant it out here in the middle of nowhere. The sign lists distances to global destinations, a Victorian traveller's joke that somehow still works today. You can stand there squinting at faded lettering to distant cities, and it genuinely feels like standing at the centre of the world.

This is a quick stop rather than a destination in itself - ten minutes maximum, unless you're the type who photographs every angle. History enthusiasts will get a kick out of it; kids find it moderately interesting for about five minutes before wanting to move on. The moors around it are genuinely lovely, so it's worth combining with a proper walk rather than treating it as an isolated visit.

Whitby itself is only a short drive away, so it works well as a morning or late afternoon diversion if you're staying at Broadings Farm or Whitby Holiday Park nearby. If you're based further afield at Northcliffe & Seaview, it's still reasonable. There's nothing to pay, nothing to book, and no particular best time to visit - though obviously you want decent weather to actually read the thing. Don't go expecting grandeur; go because it's an eccentric little footnote to local history that actually rewards the detour.
