Whalebone Arch

Two enormous whale jawbones stand sentinel on the clifftop above Whitby, a striking Victorian oddity that stops you mid-walk along the coast path. You can't miss them - they're massive, weathered grey arches framing the North Sea beyond. The arch was erected in 1853 from the bones of a whale that washed ashore, a memento of Whitby's whaling days when the town made serious money from the Arctic trade.

The walk takes you past some proper dramatic coastline, and the arch itself makes a decent photo opportunity, though the reality is less imposing than the mythology suggests. Expect to spend fifteen minutes here rather than an hour - it's more of a waypoint than a destination.

History enthusiasts will appreciate the link to Whitby's maritime heritage, and walkers on the Cleveland Way naturally pass nearby. Kids find it interesting as a talking point rather than a hands-on experience. Free to visit, obviously - it's just standing there on the clifftop. Go on a clear day; on grey afternoons it's rather melancholic.

The arch fits neatly into a broader Whitby harbour walk, combining it with the town itself, the abbey ruins, and the famous 199 steps. It's the sort of thing you'll do almost by accident if you're exploring the coast, but worth knowing about so you don't miss it.
