Larpool Viaduct

The viaduct itself is a proper Victorian engineering marvel - thirteen stone arches striding across Mulgrave Valley like something from a Brunel fever dream. Built in 1875 to carry ironstone trains down to the port at Whitby, it's now just sat there looking magnificent, doing nothing in particular except being architecturally brilliant.

You can't walk across it - that's off limits and fair enough given the age and drop. What you do instead is walk underneath or round about it, and honestly, that's enough. The scale becomes obvious only when you're stood beneath those arches, running your eyes along the stonework. It takes maybe twenty minutes to properly absorb, another twenty if you faff about taking photos from every angle.

This appeals most to Victorian industrial history types and anyone who gets a kick from engineering. Kids might find it underwhelming unless they're proper into railways and old stuff - it's less 'ride a train' and more 'look at an old train route.' That matters.

Get there via Whitby itself, which is less than a mile away. The walk from town is straightforward and free. Best visited during daylight, obviously, though the valley's prettiest in late afternoon when the light hits those arches properly. If you're stopping at Whitby Cliff Top Touring Park, it's basically on your doorstep - perfect as a morning wander before heading into Whitby proper for lunch. Worth thirty minutes of your time, no more.
