Wooler Common

The open moorland that spreads out above Wooler is one of those places that creeps up on you. What looks like an easy stroll from the town becomes something altogether more expansive once you're actually up there, with views rolling back towards the Cheviot Hills and across the Northumberland valleys.

Wooler Common itself is moorland proper - rough grassland dotted with heather, gorse, and the occasional rocky outcrop. There's no visitor centre or facilities, just open ground and good air. It's the sort of place where you can walk for an hour and see hardly anyone, which is precisely why it works. Walkers absolutely get the most from it; the terrain is straightforward enough for moderately fit people but exposed enough to feel genuinely remote. Families with young kids might find it a bit bleak and featureless unless they're keen on long moorland rambles.

Spring and early summer show the moorland at its best, though honestly it's walkable year-round if you don't mind the wind. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you want to properly explore rather than just pop up and back. There's free access - this is proper commons land - and it costs nothing to be there.

If you're based at Highburn House Caravan Park or Riverside Wooler, the common is practically on your doorstep. It's the kind of place that breaks up a park holiday nicely when you fancy some space and a proper hill walk without needing to drive anywhere.
