Woodstock Copse

Walk into Woodstock Copse and you're under a proper cathedral of oak and beech, the kind of ancient woodland that makes you forget you're only a few miles from Petworth. It's a small forest rather than a sprawling one, but that's rather the point - intimate enough to explore properly in an afternoon, substantial enough that you won't feel shortchanged.

The paths wind through mixed woodland with decent walking, though it can get boggy after rain. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, just trees, quiet, and the occasional flash of a pheasant. Families with young kids will get a good hour or so out of it, maybe more if they're into bug-hunting or den-building. Serious walkers treating it as part of a broader route through the South Downs will find it a pleasant interlude rather than a destination in itself.

You're looking at roughly two to three hours if you take your time, though there's no obligation to follow formal trails. The light filtering through the canopy in autumn is genuinely lovely.

When you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots - Wakestone & Wild is excellent if you've got the budget - Woodstock Copse makes for a proper morning's activity. Graffham Camping is closer and cheaper if you're caravan-camping. It's not dramatic or showy, but it's the sort of place where you actually notice things: moss, fungus, the particular smell of damp earth. Worth a visit if you're in the area, though I wouldn't plan a trip solely around it.
