Walking into Woodlands near Clitheroe feels like stepping back about fifty years - it's properly untouched, which is either brilliant or maddening depending on your mood. The forest itself is dense enough to feel genuinely remote, despite being only a few miles from town. You get proper woodland walking here: uneven ground, tree roots everywhere, the sort of paths that demand attention rather than a lazy stroll.

It's ideal for families who want their kids actually tired at the end of the day, and walkers after something straightforward without the crowds you'd find in the Peak District. History buffs might appreciate the older Lancastrian landscape - there's real depth to the place - though signage is minimal if that matters to you. Allow a couple of hours if you're moving at a sensible pace, longer if you're exploring properly.

What you need to know: the place is essentially free to access, though facilities are sparse. There's no café, no visitor centre, no paved paths. Go when it's dry if you value your trainers. The nearby holiday parks - Pendle View and Wigwam® Holidays Ribble Valley are both within striking distance - make decent bases for a weekend exploring this corner of Lancashire. Woodlands isn't the sort of destination you drive three hours for on its own, but as part of a proper forest-and-Ribble Valley ramble, it absolutely earns its place. The lack of development is the whole point.
