Windgate Edge

The walk up Windgate Edge from Greenfield is proper rewarding, even if the climb itself is relentless. This isn't some manicured peak - it's moorland proper, with rough ground underfoot and wind that catches you off guard near the top. The views sweep across the Pennines once you breach the ridge, and on a clear day you can see well beyond Greenfield itself. Most walkers allow an hour and a half to reach the summit without rushing, though fit hikers knock it out quicker.

It's the kind of place that appeals to serious walkers rather than casual strollers. Families with older kids will manage it fine, but the little ones might find the exposed sections a bit much. There's no café up there, no visitor centre, nothing - just you and the fell. That's actually the whole point.

If you're staying at Dovestone Holiday Park nearby, this is an excellent half-day out. The park sits perfectly positioned for tackling the edge without a long drive first. Early morning is best if you want solitude, though the weather can turn quickly, so come prepared. The ground is boggy in places after rain, so proper boots aren't optional. Free to walk, naturally. It's the Pennines - nobody charges you to go up them.
