Wind Fell

The walk up Wind Fell from Moffat is straightforward enough, but the views across the Lowlands make the effort worthwhile. You're looking at a proper hill walk rather than a casual stroll - about 600 metres of climbing - so give yourself a good couple of hours there and back depending on fitness. The summit itself is moorland, boggy in places, with cairns marking the top. On a clear day you can see right across to the Lake District; murky weather and it's honestly just a purple-brown blob of heather. The trail starts near Moffat town and follows old drovers' routes, which adds a bit of historical interest without needing a guidebook to enjoy it. Walkers will get genuine satisfaction from this one, particularly those who like their peaks unfussy and without crowds. Families with older kids who don't mind a bit of bog and exposure will manage fine; younger children might struggle with the descent. It's free, obviously - Scottish hills don't charge. Best tackled in decent weather; this isn't the sort of walk that improves in drizzle. If you're based at Moffat Camping and Caravanning Club Site, it's practically on your doorstep, which makes it ideal for a morning or afternoon out without having to drive anywhere. Wind Fell rewards you properly without being pretentious about it.
