Wilverley Inclosure

This is one of the New Forest's working inclosures - essentially a fenced-off stretch of woodland that's been managed for centuries to produce timber. Unlike the open heathland you might expect from the Forest, Wilverley is proper woodland: dense, shadowy, and genuinely atmospheric in a way that feels separate from the busier bits around New Milton.

Walkers get the most from it. The woodland paths are straightforward without being dull, threading through mixed forest where you'll spot fallow deer and hear wood pigeons if you're quiet enough. It's not a tourist spectacle - there's no visitor centre, no car park with a café, no interpretation boards. Just trees, paths, and the occasional forestry marker. That's entirely the point.

The walk takes forty minutes to an hour depending on your route, and it costs nothing. Free admission, free parking at the nearby roadside spots. Go mid-week if you want to avoid the weekend crowds from New Milton and the surrounding holiday parks - Setthorns and Holmsley are only a couple of miles away, so families based at those campsites often filter through here.

It's worth the detour if you're after something quieter than the main Forest attractions. Not a patch on Beaulieu or Bolderwood for drama, but that's exactly why it works. It's the real deal - working woodland rather than heritage theatre. Bring decent boots if it's been wet.
