About Red Hill

Rising just 108 metres above sea level, this modest Hampshire hill hardly counts as a proper peak by most standards. But what Red Hill lacks in dramatic elevation, it makes up for with surprisingly good views across the New Forest and out towards the Solent on clear days. The walk to the top from New Milton takes about 45 minutes through pleasant woodland paths, though the final approach can be a bit muddy after rain.

Families with older children will find the gentle gradient manageable, though toddlers might struggle with the longer stretches. Dog walkers love this spot - it's one of the few places in the area where you can let your hound off the lead without worrying about New Forest ponies. The summit itself is fairly unremarkable, marked by a small cairn and some gorse bushes, but the 360-degree views make the effort worthwhile.

Being free to access year-round makes Red Hill a decent option for campers staying at nearby sites like Setthorns or Hollands Wood. Allow two hours for the round trip, including time to enjoy the view and perhaps spot some deer in the surrounding woodland. It's hardly the Lake District, but for a morning stretch of the legs before exploring the rest of the New Forest National Park, this little hill does the job nicely.
