Blackhamsley Hill

Climbing through the heather and gorse, you'll find this modest peak offers some of the best elevated views across the New Forest without the crowds that gather at better-known spots. At just over 160 metres, Blackhamsley Hill won't trouble serious hikers, but the gentle ascent from any of the surrounding car parks makes it proper accessible for families with younger children.

The summit itself is fairly unremarkable - no dramatic cliff edges or stone circles here - but the panoramic sweep across the forest canopy more than compensates. On clear days, you can pick out the Solent glinting in the distance beyond the trees. It's one of those places where you appreciate the New Forest's surprising scale.

Walkers staying at nearby Setthorns Campsite or Black Knowl will find this makes for a decent morning's outing, especially if you fancy avoiding the busier honeypots like Beaulieu. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip, including time to sit and take in the view. The paths can get muddy after rain, so proper walking boots are wise.

Best visited early morning or late afternoon when the light catches the forest just right. Not exactly a destination in itself, but if you're based near New Milton and want to stretch your legs somewhere with a bit of elevation, it's well worth the effort.
