Whittlewood Forest - Bucknells Wood

Ancient woodland doesn't come much more genuine than Bucknells Wood, part of the larger Whittlewood Forest that sprawls across the Northamptonshire-Oxfordshire border. This is proper old-growth forest - the kind where you're walking through trees that have stood for centuries, not a managed plantation with neat rows and clear sightlines.

The wood itself is a working nature reserve, which means the paths are well-maintained but you won't find interpretive boards at every turn or a visitor centre with a gift shop. It's refreshingly unfussy. You get mature oak and beech, a decent canopy overhead, and genuine quiet - the sort of place where you actually notice bird calls rather than just wondering if a distant rumble is a car or a plane.

Walkers will get the most from Bucknells Wood. The terrain is gentle enough for families with older kids, though younger ones might find a long loop dull without proper engagement with nature spotting. Allow a couple of hours for a proper wander; it's the sort of place you don't rush through. Spring and early summer are best - the bluebells aren't spectacular compared to managed estates, but they're honest and atmospheric.

You're barely ten minutes from Towcester, and the campsite cluster around Silverstone means this works well as a morning walk before or after a couple of days glamping or caravan time. Several sites within walking distance, though realistically you'll want a car to move between attractions in this corner of Northamptonshire.
