Whitby Pavilion

The Pavilion sits right on Whitby's seafront, a proper Victorian theatre that's been entertaining crowds since 1907. It's the sort of place where you can catch anything from live comedy and music to pantomime, depending on what's on - and there's always something happening. The building itself has real character, all ornate plasterwork and creaky wooden seats that somehow add to the charm rather than detract from it.

If you're the type who wants theatre beyond the multiplex, this is worth checking the programme for. The acts that come through are genuinely decent - touring productions, stand-up comics, local orchestras. Families with kids will find the annual pantomime particularly good fun, though it books up fast. Allow a couple of hours for a show, obviously, plus time to grab chips from one of the places along the harbour first.

Admission depends entirely on what's playing, so you'll need to ring ahead or check the website to see what's on during your stay. What makes it brilliant for a park holiday is the location - Whitby Holiday Park and Broadings Farm are both within walking distance, so you're not scrambling for transport after an evening out. The whole seafront area is worth an evening stroll anyway, and the Pavilion gives you an actual reason to dress up a bit and do something different from the usual caravan park routine.
