Wheatcroft Wood

Walk into Wheatcroft Wood and you're immediately wrapped in proper Lancashire woodland - tall trees, dappled light, the sort of place where you actually notice the quiet. It's a straightforward forest stretch near Clitheroe, nothing pretentious, just decent trees and footpaths that let you move at your own pace without needing a map degree.

The wood works best for walkers after a morning in town or as a leg-stretch between other activities. You're looking at an hour or so for a decent wander, longer if you dawdle and actually look at things. It's the kind of place where children get to actually run about without you fretting over them straying too far - the paths keep you roughly on track, and there's enough woodland interest to hold their attention for a bit.

We'd suggest calling ahead from Clitheroe if you need specifics on parking or seasonal access, though Lancashire's woodland access tends to be fairly straightforward. Spring's lovely here when the undergrowth gets going, though autumn's probably the real draw if you want proper woodland atmosphere.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Pendle View is closest at just over two miles away - Wheatcroft fits in nicely as a gentle morning activity before heading to somewhere like Pendle Hill for the actual views, or into Clitheroe proper for lunch. It's not the sort of place that demands a whole day, but that's rather the point. Sometimes the best woodland walks are the straightforward ones.
