Wheal Peevor

Ruins of engine houses and mining buildings scatter across the heathland here, remnants of Cornwall's copper and tin mining past that once made this county wealthy. Wheal Peevor worked from the 1700s through to the early 20th century, and what's left today gives you a proper sense of the industrial scale these operations once reached.

Walking between the crumbling stone structures, you'll spot the distinctive engine house chimneys that dot so much of Cornwall's landscape. The site feels wonderfully wild now - gorse and bracken have reclaimed much of the workings, making it as much about the landscape as the history. It's free to wander around, though there's no formal interpretation so you'll need to use your imagination.

History enthusiasts will get the most from a visit, particularly those interested in industrial heritage. Families might find it a bit sparse unless the kids are into scrambling over old walls. The walking is easy enough across the heath, and you could easily combine it with other mine sites in the area.

From Mount Hawke it's a short drive, and it works well as part of a mining heritage tour if you're staying at one of the holiday parks around Perran View or further north. Allow an hour unless you're really into photographing ruins. Best visited on a clear day when the views across the moors open up properly.
