Whaye Plantation

The forest here rolls across the hills above Moffat with the sort of quiet you don't get often. Whaye Plantation is a proper working woodland rather than a polished visitor attraction - think tall conifers, open glades, and proper peace. You'll find a decent network of paths threading through, ranging from gentle rambles to proper huffing climbs depending on which way you go. The trees do their job of blocking out the world entirely.

It's the sort of place where walkers actually want to spend time rather than just pass through. The views back towards Moffat and the surrounding moorland shift depending on where you are in the plantation, and that's the appeal really - you're walking through something living and working. Bring proper boots though; the ground gets boggy after rain and the paths can be overgrown in summer. Allow a couple of hours minimum, longer if you're the type to stop and breathe.

If you're based at Moffat Camping and Caravanning Club Site just down the road, this is ideal for burning off some energy without needing to drive anywhere. There's no visitor centre, no café, no car park with facilities - just woodland. That's either brilliant or disappointing depending on what you want. For families wanting to let kids loose in the trees, it's worth the trip. For those after manicured trails and information boards, you'll be better served elsewhere in the region. Go when the weather's been decent and dry.
