About Wharmton
At 408 metres, Wharmton won't test experienced fell walkers, but that's partly why it works. The peak sits in that sweet spot between accessible and rewarding. On a clear day, you get the Pennines rolling out in all directions, and on a grey one, there's something almost moody about the mist rolling across the moorland. The descent's straightforward if your knees are up for it.
Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a park stroll - you need proper boots and the weather can turn quickly - but families with kids aged eight-plus who've done a few hills will manage fine. Solo types after a quick blast of fresh air and a proper view will love it.
If you're basing yourself at Dovestone Holiday Park just down the road, Wharmton makes an ideal half-day outing. You're close enough to knock it out before lunch, yet far enough from the tourist trail that you'll likely have the moorland mostly to yourself. Admission's free - it's all access land - and there's decent parking near Greenfield village to start from. Allow two hours door to door if you're not lingering on the summit.
