Whalley Park

The walk into Whalley Park from Clitheroe takes you through proper Lancashire countryside - moorland edges giving way to woodland where the River Ribble runs through. It's a nature reserve that rewards slow exploration rather than quick visits; bring binoculars if you've got them, though honestly you'll spot plenty without.

This is walker territory first and foremost. The riverside paths are manageable for most fitness levels, and there's something genuinely peaceful about the way the landscape opens up around you. Bird spotters will have a field day, especially if you time it for spring migration or autumn passage. The trees along the water are mature enough to feel like you've properly escaped, even though Clitheroe's only a couple of miles off.

Families with young kids might find it a bit long if they're expecting facilities or structured activities - there aren't many of those here. But if yours are the type to hunt for sticks and splash in streams, they'll be in their element. Bring packed lunch because there's nowhere to buy food once you're in.

Staying at Clitheroe Camping and Caravanning Club Site puts you three miles away, which is close enough for an afternoon visit but far enough that you're not tripping over caravanners. The better-rated glamping spots at Little Oakhurst are similarly convenient if you want something with a bit more comfort. It slots in well as a quieter counterpoint to busier Ribble Valley attractions - good for a morning, then onwards with the rest of your day.
