Wetley Moor Common

A proper stretch of moorland between Stoke-on-Trent and Leek, Wetley Moor Common is the sort of place locals walk without fuss and visitors tend to miss entirely. It's open heathland with bracken, heather when it's flowering, and the kind of wide sky that makes you forget you're in the Midlands. The paths are straightforward - nothing technical, just good ground underfoot where you can let your mind wander.

Walkers get the most from it. You're looking at maybe an hour's ramble depending on which route you take, and there are proper views across Staffordshire from the higher bits. It's free, obviously, and worth dropping in if you're based at Stone Wall Farm or any of the other caravan parks nearby. The moorland itself won't take your breath away - it's not dramatic or rare - but it's genuine countryside with breathing room, which counts for something.

The real appeal is the lack of theatre. No visitor centre, no café, no Instagram queue. You turn up, walk, and leave. Families with older kids will do fine here. Younger ones might find it a touch dull after twenty minutes unless you're the type to hunt for insects and count birds. Winter can be bleak and wet, so spring through autumn is your window.

If you're caravan-based in the area and need a leg-stretch without driving far, it fills that gap well enough. Don't go expecting the Lakes or the Peak District. Go because it's there and it's free.
