Park Hall County Park and Hume Quarry

The old quarry at Park Hall is one of those places that rewards a bit of poking about. You're looking at a former extraction site that's been reclaimed by nature - steep sides thick with vegetation, water pooling at the base, and the kind of industrial geology that tells you exactly what Staffordshire's been built on. The quarry itself is the draw here, along with the surrounding parkland that's surprisingly green given you're barely outside Stoke-on-Trent.

It's the sort of spot walkers genuinely enjoy. The paths around the rim give decent views into the worked stone, and if you're into industrial archaeology or just like understanding how a landscape got shaped, there's plenty to read into. Kids will find it interesting for twenty minutes or so - the water usually catches their attention - but it's not a playground, so don't expect them to be entertained for hours.

Free to visit, as far as I can tell, though I'd check locally before you go. Allow an hour for a proper wander, less if you're just passing through. It slots well into a wider walking route around the area. If you're based at one of the nearby caravan sites - Stone Wall Farm or Luzlow are closest - it's an easy leg without being a major expedition.

Worth stopping for? Yes, especially if you're already in the Potteries area. The quarry's a genuine bit of industrial heritage, and the parkland's pleasant enough. Just go in without expecting anything flashy. It's honest landscape, nothing more.
