Westlands Copse

You'll find Westlands Copse a proper woodland walk from Petworth - the sort of place locals know about but tourists usually miss. It's a modest forest, nothing that'll take your breath away with dramatic vistas, but the paths are straightforward enough and the trees offer decent cover on grey Sussex days.

The main draw here is simplicity. If you're after a gentle woodland stroll without navigating moorland or dealing with crowds, this delivers. Walkers of any ability will manage it fine. Families with young kids should be okay so long as they're happy on a regular country path - nothing technical. The woodland's quiet enough that you might spot deer if you're lucky, though honestly it's more about getting some fresh air between the trees than expecting wildlife theatre.

How long to give it? An hour, maybe ninety minutes if you want to dawdle. Don't turn up expecting anything too elaborate - interpretation boards or visitor facilities. This is just woodland, done straightforwardly.

It slots well into a South Downs break based around Petworth, particularly if you're camping at Graffham or staying at Woodfire at Westerlands nearby. Neither are far enough away to make a special trip worthwhile on their own, but worth a morning or afternoon if you're already in the area.
