Westexe Recreation Ground

The Westexe Recreation Ground sits on the outskirts of Tiverton and is the sort of place locals know about but tourists tend to miss. It's a proper nature reserve - meadows, woodland, and water features - that's been left to do its own thing rather than get manicured into submission.

You'll find walking trails threading through the site, nothing strenuous, mostly on the level. The best time to visit is late spring through early autumn when the wildflowers kick in and the bird populations are active. Bring binoculars if you're into that sort of thing; the reserve attracts a solid range of species without being a designated rarity hotspot.

It's ideal for families wanting a break from the car but not wanting to trek miles. Kids can burn energy without the parents needing a map degree. The paths are accessible enough that you won't need specialist footwear, though after rain it can get a bit muddy. Allow an hour to ninety minutes if you're walking the full circuit without rushing.

The reserve works well as a gentle morning activity before heading to your accommodation - Nirvana Glamping is less than five miles away and makes for easy coordination. It's free access and no fixed hours that I could find, so you've got flexibility to drop in when the mood takes. This isn't a destination in itself, but it's exactly what you want when you need some air and green space without the crowds. Tiverton itself is close enough for lunch afterwards.
