Tucked between the rolling Exmoor foothills and the Culm Valley, this market town operates at a distinctly unhurried pace. The River Exe meanders past the high street, where independent shops mix with chain stores in that familiar English way - busy enough on market days, properly quiet midweek.

Knightshayes Court dominates the local attractions scene, its Victorian Gothic grandeur overlooking landscaped gardens that are well worth the short drive from town. The National Trust property offers proper country house drama without the London prices. For something completely different, the Cottage Beer Project has carved out a reputation among real ale enthusiasts - their taproom pulls excellent pints in what feels like someone's front room.
