Bampton Heritage & Visitor Centre

The Heritage Centre sits quietly on the edge of Bampton, a proper working market town between Tiverton and the edge of Exmoor. Inside, you'll find the usual small-town collection - local photographs, farming implements, bits of textile history (Bampton's been weaving cloth for centuries). The real draw isn't any single showstopper object but rather the sense of how ordinary people actually lived here.

It's the kind of place that makes sense if you're already in Bampton, not a reason to drive out specially. History buffs and anyone keen on rural Devon's industrial past will find it worthwhile. Kids under ten might flag after thirty minutes unless there's a specific activity on. Allow an hour, maximum two if you're reading everything.

Admission is free, which is decent. Go on a weekday morning if possible - less likely to be caught behind a group, and the volunteers are usually on hand with proper knowledge rather than just opening up.

If you're staying at Nirvana Glamping or Waterrow Touring Park, Bampton's a pleasant afternoon's wandering - the town itself has decent pubs and a couple of independent shops. The Centre works well as part of a broader look at North Devon's market towns rather than a standalone destination. Pair it with a walk up to the church or along the river for a proper half-day out.
