Western Tower

A squat, sturdy brick tower standing alone in the Suffolk landscape east of Woodbridge - that's the Western Tower, and it's one of those places that stops you in your tracks precisely because you can't quite work out why it's there. Built in the 16th century as a defensive structure (probably), it's basically a solid chunk of history that's managed to survive when so much else hasn't. The tower itself is modest in scale but commands attention in a way that speaks to proper craftsmanship - those bricks have held firm for centuries.

Historically minded visitors will find it worth a detour, though you should manage expectations. There's no visitor centre, no lengthy exploration inside - it's more about standing outside, taking in the structure, and wondering about the hands that laid those bricks. The walk to reach it can be pleasant enough depending on the route you take through the surrounding countryside.

Timing-wise, allow 20 minutes unless you're really keen on local history and want to linger. Check locally in Woodbridge before you head out, as access and opening details aren't always straightforward. It works well as part of a broader ramble around the area rather than a standalone destination - you're not going to spend half a day here.

If you're camping at Carlton Meres, Birds and Bees, or any of the other sites dotted around this corner of Suffolk, the tower makes a decent waypoint on a country walk. It's the kind of thing that slots nicely into a park holiday when you want to get off the campsite and explore proper Suffolk history.
