West Sands

Two miles of golden sand stretches out from St Andrews like something from a postcard you'd actually want to send. West Sands is the kind of beach that makes you understand why people bother with the Scottish coast - proper wide, backed by dunes, and on a decent day it's genuinely lovely.

The beach itself is the main event. You can walk for ages without hitting a dead end, paddle if you're hardy, or just park yourself with a book and watch the light change across the bay. The backdrop of the Old Course and St Andrews town gives it character, though whether that's a plus depends on how you feel about golf tourism. It's free to access and there's decent parking at the north end.

Families get good value here - kids can burn energy on the sand without the artificial stuff of a theme park. The water's cold even in summer, so expect paddling rather than proper swimming unless you're brave. Low season is when it's best - fewer people, better light, and you can actually think. High summer brings the crowds that come with any beach near a university town.

If you're staying at St Andrews Holiday Park, Craigtoun Meadows, or one of the caravan spots nearby, this is your obvious beach break. It's also walking distance from the town centre if you want fish and chips after. Allow a couple of hours minimum, longer if you're the type to settle in. Wind can pick up in the afternoon, so morning visits tend to feel calmer. Not dramatic or wild - just dependable, sandy, and worth the trip if you're in Fife.
