Count on an hour, maybe ninety minutes if the kids get properly absorbed.

This is solid family territory. Young children fixate on the seahorses and starfish touch pools. Teenagers will lose interest faster, though the feeding demonstrations occasionally draw them back in. Adults who actually care about Scottish marine life will find it worthwhile - it does a decent job explaining what's in the Firth of Forth and local waters.

The real strength is convenience. You're staying at Craigtoun Meadows Holiday Park or Cairnsmill and need a wet-weather option? This scratches that itch without the hour-long drive to Edinburgh Zoo. It's the kind of place that works brilliantly as a rainy Tuesday morning activity between beach trips and chip suppers, not a headline event.

Admission is paid but hardly bank-breaking. Go midweek if possible - weekends pull in school groups and it gets cramped. The location itself is the draw though - pop out the doors and you're in St Andrews proper, with the castle ruins and cathedral within walking distance. Pair it with Craigtoun Meadows' own leisure facilities and you've got a solid half-day sorted.
