West Park

The walk around West Park takes you through proper Sussex woodland and open grassland on the edge of Bognor Regis - the sort of place locals know well but day-trippers often miss. It's a nature reserve that gives you back what you put in: stick to the main paths and you'll spot birds, the occasional deer if you're quiet, and enough space to actually hear yourself think away from the seafront crowds.

The reserve isn't particularly dramatic or vast, but it works as a solid half-morning outing, especially for families with younger kids who want to burn energy without a full day's commitment. The terrain is manageable - mostly flat or gently rolling - so pushchairs and unfit relatives won't struggle. Birdwatchers come here year-round; spring and early autumn are the best for spotting migrants. Allow an hour to ninety minutes depending on pace and how much you stop to look about.

It's free to access, which is the only sensible way to price a local nature reserve. Check before you go which paths are open - they do maintenance work - but generally you can't go far wrong exploring here.

If you're staying at Butlins just down the road or one of the caravan parks within a couple of miles, West Park works perfectly as a quieter morning break from holiday park entertainment. It's a proper contrast to the amusement arcades and fairgrounds of Bognor itself, and you won't feel rushed. Not spectacular, but honest.
