Wern-fach

The walk up Wern-fach isn't long, but it's steep enough to remind your legs why they came to Wales. This 400-metre peak sits just inland from Abergele, making it a proper quick fix if you're staying at one of the caravan parks dotted along the coast - Plas Farm is practically on your doorstep at less than two miles away.

What you get is genuinely worthwhile. The summit gives you views across to Snowdonia on a clear day, and the Welsh coastline stretches out below. The moorland around the peak feels wild and windswept, even though you're nowhere near remote. On a grey afternoon when the cloud rolls in, it's quite atmospheric. Worth saying: this isn't a tourist attraction in the formal sense. There's no visitor centre, no facilities, no fees. Just a hill and a path.

For walkers staying in the Abergele area, it's ideal. Families with kids who can manage a bit of uphill work will find it manageable - allow about ninety minutes there and back depending on fitness. It's the sort of walk you'd pair with a beach trip or a visit to nearby attractions rather than make a pilgrimage to on its own.

Go early morning or late afternoon. The crowds stay away, and you'll have the ridge to yourself. It's nowhere near fancy, but that's precisely the point.
