Wenning Waterfall

The walk to Wenning Waterfall is the whole point here. It's a proper fell-side trek from near Carnforth that rewards you with a genuine waterfall - the kind that actually thunders rather than trickles, especially after rain. The water cascades down dark rock into a deep pool below, and the spray catches you if you get too close. Allow a solid two hours for the round trip, longer if you're taking it slow with kids or want to linger at the base.

This is walker territory. Not beginners' territory - the path gets steep in places and can be boggy. You'll see it in bits where the steps are worn down from years of boots, and in others it's just rough moorland. The surrounding landscape rolls out across Yorkshire hills, which is worth pausing for even if your legs are knackered.

It works brilliantly as a half-day excursion if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks. Primrose Glamping Pods is just three miles away, making it an easy drive to the start of the walk. Orcaber Farm, six miles off, gives you a similar setup with more traditional caravan facilities. Either way, it's the sort of activity that justifies a break from the campsite - gets everyone moving properly rather than just pottering around.

Go early if you can. The light's better on the rockface, and you'll have the place quieter. Waterproof boots aren't optional.
