Wenallt

The climb up Wenallt from Bala takes about forty minutes if you're moving at a decent pace, and the effort pays off completely once you crest the ridge. You're looking out across Snowdonia from a proper vantage point here - not the circus of Snowdon itself, but something quieter and more honest. The views sweep across the lake towards the Arenig peaks, and on a clear day you can pick out mountains rolling away in every direction.

This is walker territory, no question. The path is well-trodden but steep in places, so it's not a casual stroll for young kids, though teenagers with any fitness will manage it fine. The appeal is straightforward - you get proper mountain air, a sense of actual achievement, and the kind of views that make you understand why people move to Wales in the first place. There's no café at the top, no visitor centre, just you and the landscape.

Tyn Cornel Camping sits within striking distance, making Wenallt an easy half-day from base camp. It's the sort of walk you'd pair with exploring Bala itself - the town has enough going on to fill an afternoon, and the lake walks are gentle alternatives if the weather turns. Allow a couple of hours round trip including a breather at the top. Go early in the day for the clearest light and to avoid the afternoon mist that often rolls in. Free to access, obviously. Bring proper footwear - the ground gets boggy in patches.
