Welton Haven Marina

The water at Welton Haven Marina sits calm most mornings, reflecting the Northamptonshire sky like glass. It's a working marina on the outskirts of Daventry, so you won't find theme park entertainment here - what you get instead is the genuine rhythm of a place where people actually keep their boats and spend weekends on the water.

If you're after a walk with a bit of purpose, the marina works well. The towpath circles the water, giving you a solid hour's ramble with decent views across the lake. Birdwatchers tend to perk up here - there's proper activity if you know what you're looking for, though bring binoculars. It's the sort of place that rewards sitting still for twenty minutes with a coffee more than rushing about taking photographs.
