Everdon Stubbs (WT)

About 2 miles south of Daventry sits a proper slice of ancient woodland that most people drive straight past. Everdon Stubbs is a Woodland Trust site - 45 acres of mixed broadleaf forest that's wonderfully low-key and entirely free to wander. You'll find yourself among oak, ash and hazel with the kind of quietness you don't get near towns.

The paths are reasonably maintained, though it's muddy after rain and feels more genuine for it. Walk here expecting a solid hour rather than a quick stop, though you could easily spend longer just sitting on the woodland floor listening to birdsong. Families with kids who don't need everything signposted will appreciate it. History buffs should know the wood's been here since at least medieval times - there's real depth to the place beyond the novelty.

Timing-wise, spring's spectacular for bluebells, but honestly any season works. Winter's brilliant if you fancy spotting dormice or woodland structure without the leaf chaos. The nearest campsite with proper facilities is Whitefeather Campsite about 3 miles away, though Hideaway Wood Farm if you want something more unusual with its alpacas and glamping angle.

There's no café or visitor centre, which means it stays unspoilt. Bring a proper map or use your phone - the Woodland Trust site has downloadable guides. It's not dramatic or Instagram-worthy, but that's precisely the point. Real woodland, no fuss.
