Wedlake Tor

The walk up Wedlake Tor takes about twenty minutes from the car park, climbing steadily through moorland that opens up properly halfway up. You get proper views across Dartmoor once you're up there - rolling brown hills stretching toward the horizon, with Tavistock sitting below in the valley if you know where to look. The tor itself isn't massive, but the exposed stone outcrops give good scrambling if you fancy a bit of hands-on work at the summit.

It's the kind of place walkers will genuinely enjoy, especially if you're already exploring this corner of Devon. The path's straightforward enough for families with capable kids, though the exposed sections at the top mean you want to watch younger ones. Allow an hour if you're not rushing.

Timing-wise, early morning beats afternoon - fewer people and better light across the moor. Avoid it straight after rain when the path gets properly boggy.

If you're based at Lydford Caravan & Camping Park, just under five miles away, this works brilliantly as a morning walk before heading down to Tavistock for lunch. The tor pairs well with other Dartmoor walks in the area - you're not looking at hours here, more of a decent leg-stretch break in a longer day. It's worth the detour if you're doing the moor properly, not something to drive out of your way for on its own.
