Webb's Patch

You'll find Webb's Patch just outside Calne, a proper little nature reserve that punches above its weight for somewhere so modest in size. It's the kind of spot locals know well but rarely makes it onto visitor itineraries - which is a shame, because it's genuinely worth a quiet morning or afternoon if you're camping nearby.

The reserve is a working landscape with wet meadows, scrubland, and woodland in various stages of recovery. What that means in practice is you get a decent range of habitats packed into a small area. Bird-watchers tend to make the pilgrimage here, particularly during spring and autumn migration - warblers, finches, and the occasional rarer visitor keep things interesting. The walking is gentle rather than demanding, which makes it suitable for families who don't fancy a six-mile slog, though toddlers might get restless after forty minutes or so.

It's free to explore, and there's no gate-keeping that I encountered. Best visited in the quieter months when birds are more active and you're not fighting crowds. Summer can feel a bit thin on wildlife and the paths can get muddy after rain, so April to May or September to October are your sweet spots.

If you're staying at one of the caravan sites around Devizes or Calne - and there are several within five miles - Webb's Patch works well as a short morning visit before heading elsewhere. Don't expect facilities or a visitor centre; bring your binoculars, sensible footwear, and manage expectations accordingly. It's not a destination in itself, but it's a solid addition to a Wiltshire camping trip.
