The Bowood Estate

The grounds at Bowood are sprawling enough that you could easily spend half a day wandering without seeing the same path twice. Located just outside Calne, this is proper Wiltshire estate country - the kind of place where you turn a corner and suddenly understand why the landed gentry bothered with all those acres in the first place.

You're looking at woodland walks, open parkland, and the sort of manicured gardens that take a small army to maintain. There's a lake, which is the real draw on a sunny day - the kind of spot where families with younger children can let them burn off energy without worrying about them disappearing into the undergrowth. The rhododendrons put on a decent show in late spring if you time it right.

Walkers will find plenty to get their teeth into here. The terrain is mostly gentle, with enough variation to keep things interesting rather than just trudging around in circles. History types should know this was home to the Lansdowne family and has been in the same hands for centuries, though I'd check what buildings or collections are actually open before you visit - estates like this can be selective about what the public gets to see.

It's free to walk the grounds, which is the main draw. You're essentially visiting someone's rather enormous back garden, so the usual rules apply - stick to marked paths and don't go treating it like your personal playground. If you're camped at Blackland Lakes just two miles away, it's an obvious leg-stretch from base. Worth an afternoon, not a full day unless you're the type who could spend hours photographing trees.
