Crab Tree Copse

You won't find much in the way of signage or visitor infrastructure at Crab Tree Copse - it's a proper woodland walk rather than a managed attraction. The copse sits a few miles outside Calne and delivers exactly what it promises: mature trees, quiet paths, and the kind of peace you're after when you've had enough of manicured gardens and car parks.

It's the sort of place walkers and nature enthusiasts will actually enjoy. The woodland floor is soft underfoot, and if you time it right - spring for bluebells, autumn for the leaf turn - there's real colour here. Bring binoculars if you're into birds; you'll see more without the crowds. Kids might get restless after thirty minutes unless they're the exploring type, but families who like a gentle ramble will find it works well as part of a longer country walk around Calne.

There's no admission charge that I'm aware of, and no set opening hours - it's a wood, not a visitor centre. Allow an hour for a proper potter about, or thirty minutes if you're just cutting through. The nearest holiday parks - Blackland Lakes and Roe Deer Fields are both close by - make it a decent add-on if you're based in the area for a week. It won't be the highlight of your trip, but as a leg-stretch between proper attractions, it's well worth the detour. The Wiltshire countryside around here needs exploring on foot, and this is a decent starting point.
