Market Cross

There's something rather lovely about Calne's Market Cross - the sort of thing you walk past without thinking, then suddenly notice and wonder how old it actually is. Standing in the town centre, it's a proper snapshot of medieval market life, the kind of structure that once defined where traders set up their stalls and townspeople gathered for news and gossip.

It's not a sprawling attraction that'll eat up half your day. More of a 15-minute wander, really - you'll take a few photos, read the information if there is any, and move on. But that's rather the point. If you're into local history or architecture, it's worth a look while you're exploring Calne itself. Kids won't find much to do here beyond running circles round it, so factor it in as a quick stop rather than a destination on its own.

The real appeal comes if you're basing yourself at one of the nearby parks - Mill Farm Glamping or Blackland Lakes are close enough that you could pop into Calne's town centre without faffing about. Pair it with a walk around town, a coffee, maybe some lunch, and you've got a perfectly pleasant morning sorted.

Free to visit, obviously - it's a public monument in the middle of town. Best time is during daylight hours, though there's no formal opening times to worry about. On market days it probably has more atmosphere, worth checking locally if you're keen on seeing it properly busy.
