Waun Fach

The climb up Waun Fach takes you into proper mountain country, even if at 809 metres it's not exactly a giant. What it does offer is that satisfying sense of earning something - the path from Hereford isn't a gentle stroll, and the views across the Black Mountains and into Wales make every step worthwhile.

You'll want good boots and at least two hours if you're coming from town, longer if you take the longer route via nearby peaks. The moorland summit itself is bleak and windswept, which sounds grim but actually feels brilliant on a clear day. On a murky afternoon, mind, you're just walking through fog.

Walkers will get the most out of this. It's not a casual family outing unless your kids are proper hikers - the terrain is rough and exposed in places. Spring through to early autumn is your window; winter here gets properly wild. Free to climb, obviously. No visitor centre, no facilities up top, so bring water and snacks.

Based near Hereford, you've got good options if you're doing a walking holiday. Olchon Valley Campsite and Cwmdu Campsite sit roughly 4-5 miles away, making them sensible bases before a dawn start. Kaya at Blackhill Farm and Chapel House Farm Campsite give you similar proximity without the hassle of driving at first light. The real appeal here is combining Waun Fach with other Black Mountain walks - it's part of a proper network, not a standalone trip.
