Waterfall Cottage

A modest stone cottage sits where a beck tumbles down the North Yorkshire moorland just outside Whitby - nothing grand, but it's got genuine character. The waterfall itself isn't dramatic, more of a pretty cascade in a wooded dell, and the cottage (which you view from outside) dates back centuries. Locals reckon it was built on this spot specifically because of the water source, which made sense before mains came along.

The walk to reach it takes about twenty minutes on foot from Whitby town centre, following the beck upstream through woodland. It's gentle going, proper lovely in autumn when the trees turn. You're not climbing anything steep or technical - even kids can manage it without complaint, though younger ones might need a hand over the rockier sections near the water.

This works well as a short break if you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby - Whitby Cliff Top Touring Park or Broadings Farm are both within easy driving distance. It's the sort of spot that justifies a morning ramble before heading back for lunch, rather than an all-day outing. Free to visit and access is straightforward from the town.

Historically minded visitors will get the most from it, along with walkers after a gentle riverside stroll. The waterfall won't astound you - it's not Aysgarth or High Force - but the whole setting hangs together nicely. Worth the detour if you're in Whitby anyway, not worth driving miles out of your way for.
