Waspber Hill

The walk up Waspber Hill rewards you with proper expansive views across the Ribble Valley - it's the kind of fell that punches above its weight for effort required. From Clitheroe, it's accessible enough that you won't need a dawn start or technical gear, but steep enough to feel like you've earned your lunch at the summit.

You're looking at roughly an hour's climb through moorland and pasture, with the final push climbing limestone grass that gets your legs working. The real draw is the panorama once you're up there - the valley spreads out below, with the distinctive shapes of Pendle Hill and the Bowland fells visible on clearer days. It's not a mountain, but it's got character.

Walkers and fell-baggers will get the most from this. It's not demanding enough to deter casual hikers with reasonable fitness, yet proper enough that you'll feel satisfied afterwards. Kids aged eight upwards could manage it depending on legs and temperament - don't expect scenic viewpoints and benches, though. It's fairly exposed once you're up there, so wind can be a factor.

If you're camping nearby - Thornton Hall is the closest at just over five miles, or you've got glamping options at Peaks and Pods and Malham - Waspber works as a morning outing before heading elsewhere. There's no admission fee, no facilities on the hill itself, so bring water and something decent to eat. Early autumn's your sweet spot - summer gets boggy in places, winter can be slippery.
