Warrenpoint Park

The waterfront at Warrenpoint is one of those places that catches you off guard. You're expecting a modest nature reserve on the edge of Newry, and instead you get proper views across Carlingford Lough to the Mourne Mountains - the sort of landscape that makes you understand why people come back here year after year.

It's a straightforward spot: woodland paths that wind down to the shore, open grassland where locals bring their dogs, and the kind of quiet that feels increasingly rare. The walking is gentle rather than challenging, which means families with younger kids won't hit a wall halfway round. That said, it's not a theme park - if your children need constant stimulation, they'll be bored within the hour.

History types will appreciate that you're standing at a crossing point of sorts. The lough itself has serious stories embedded in it. Bird watchers do well here, particularly in winter when migratory species pitch up.

There's no visitor centre to speak of, so show up expecting to do your own thing. It's free, thankfully, and you can wander for an afternoon without spending a penny. If you're staying at Kilbroney Caravan Park just up the road - and it's excellent value - Warrenpoint works as a solid half-day outing. The light's best in late afternoon, when the mountains turn proper dramatic. Worth the drive from Newry town centre, though don't expect a destination that'll keep you entertained all day.
