Wall Village Green

The green at Wall is one of those places that creeps up on you. You're driving through Northumberland's rolling countryside, a few miles south of Hexham, and suddenly there's this proper little nature reserve - all open grassland and wildflowers, the sort of spot where you can actually hear yourself think. It's genuinely free to access, no gates, no car park fees, just a genuine community space that's been left to do what nature does best.

Walking the perimeter takes about forty minutes at a leisurely pace, and the views across to the Pennines are worth the effort. Spring and early summer are best - you'll catch the wildflowers in full swing, and the bird life picks up noticeably. Families with younger kids might find it a bit sparse after twenty minutes, but anyone who enjoys a straightforward country walk will appreciate the lack of crowds and the genuine quietness of the place.

It works nicely as a morning detour if you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots - Sycamore Glamping Pods (6.1 miles away) is particularly well-regarded - or if you're staying at East Farm Glamping (5.7 miles) and want a gentle break before heading into Hexham itself for lunch. Don't expect facilities; there's nothing here but grass and space, which is partly why it's worth visiting. It's the sort of reserve that reminds you why you bothered with a countryside break in the first place.
