Chipchase Castle

A proper working castle still inhabited by the same family after nearly four centuries - that's Chipchase, and it's a rare thing. Set on the banks of the North Tyne just outside Hexham, this pele tower turned country seat has the kind of lived-in feel you won't find in many heritage properties. You'll walk through rooms that actually matter to people, past family portraits and furniture that hasn't been rearranged for visitor comfort.

The castle itself dates from the 14th century, though what you see today is largely Georgian additions - the family clearly wasn't one for leaving well alone. The grounds are generous and genuine, with walled gardens that give the place real character rather than the manicured look of a museum piece. The Tyne Valley location means the light's often moody and lovely, especially in late afternoon.

History buffs will appreciate the Border tower heritage and the fact it's still functioning as a private home. Families with older children do well here - there's enough space to explore without feeling herded. Younger kids might find it a bit slow unless they're already castle-mad. The walk from the car park is pleasant rather than taxing.

Check opening times and admission costs before you drive out, as they're not always predictable for private castles. Worth the detour if you're already in the area, not worth planning a trip around.
