Simonburn Castle (Remains)

All that's left of Simonburn Castle is a crumbling stone tower rising from the Northumberland moorland, a few miles south of Hexham. It's a proper ruin - no reconstructed walls or visitor centre, just the raw remains of a medieval fortification that's been slowly surrendering to the weather for centuries.

The castle dates back to the 14th century, built as a stronghold during the volatile border wars between England and Scotland. What you get now is essentially a defensive tower keep, battered but still standing, which tells you something about how solidly these things were built. It's the sort of place that rewards a bit of curiosity rather than offering polished attractions.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a destination in itself - you're looking at maybe twenty minutes of actual exploration - but it works brilliantly as a waypoint on a longer ramble through the Tyne Valley. The surrounding countryside is genuinely lovely, rolling and open, and the castle sits within reach of several good footpaths.

There's no admission charge and no facilities, which means you need to be prepared. Access appears to be open year-round, though you'll want daylight and decent boots. The moorland can be boggy after rain.

If you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Sycamore Glamping Pods or Stonehaugh are both within easy reach - this slots neatly into a half-day exploration. Don't come expecting drama, but do come if you like walking off the beaten track and actual medieval stonework. It's honest history.
