Little Swinburn Reservoir

A modest reservoir tucked into the Northumberland countryside between Hexham and the higher fells. Little Swinburn doesn't announce itself - there's no visitor centre, no café, just a body of water surrounded by rough grass and the occasional angler. But that's rather the point.

Walkers get the most from this spot. The reservoir sits on a decent circular route, and the moorland around it opens up views across to the Pennines on clear days. It's the sort of place where you might see curlew or red grouse if you're patient. The water itself is quiet - fishing permits are required, so you won't find busy swimming spots or paddleboards. That keeps it proper peaceful.

There's free access, as far as anyone can tell, and you'll want to allow a good hour for a leisurely walk around the perimeter or slightly longer if you're the type to sit with binoculars. It's best visited outside peak summer weekends when the car park fills with families who lose interest after twenty minutes.

If you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots - Sycamore Pods is closest at under three miles - it makes a good morning or early evening walk. Combine it with a longer hike into the Pennines or a pint in Hexham afterwards. Little Swinburn won't set your heart racing, but it's exactly what you need if you're after something low-key and genuinely quiet.
