The walk itself is brief and flat, taking maybe an hour there and back depending on how long you linger. If you're staying at Birch Bank Farm or Netherwood, both are within a couple of miles, making it an easy morning or afternoon venture.

The best time is early summer when the water's flowing properly and you're not sweltering. Arrival is free and unrestricted as far as I can tell - no gates, no fees, just turn up and find a spot. It won't blow your mind. It's not trying to. What it does offer is a genuine escape from Chester's crowds without needing a car journey.
