Walberton Baptist Church

The red-brick Baptist Chapel sitting just outside Arundel is one of those places you'd drive past without a second glance, which is precisely why it's worth stopping for. Built in 1837, it's a proper working church that still draws its congregation on Sundays, and the interior has that genuine, unrestored feel that makes you believe actual people worship here rather than tourists shuffling through.

There's nothing showy about it. The chapel is compact and sincere, with simple wooden pews and original Victorian detailing that hasn't been glossed up for the heritage industry. If you're into 19th-century nonconformist architecture or just curious about how rural communities organised their spiritual lives, it's genuinely interesting. For most visitors though, this is a quick stop during a walk around Arundel rather than a destination in itself.

Worth timing it right: call ahead to check if you can look inside, as it's not always open to casual visitors. The real value is combining it with a proper walk down to Arundel itself - the castle and riverside are only a mile or so away.

If you're based at one of the caravan parks within a few miles - Old Farm Slindon, Brookside near Littlehampton, or Rowan Park over towards Bognor Regis - Walberton makes for a worthwhile 15-minute diversion on the way to Arundel's more famous attractions. Don't expect to spend more than half an hour here. Go early in the day when the light's best for photos through the windows.
