Bluebells Wood

The woodland floor here turns electric blue for a few weeks each spring, and it's genuinely worth timing your Sussex trip around. Bluebells Wood, near Arundel, is the sort of place that makes you understand why people get sentimental about English countryside - thousands of these delicate flowers carpet the forest in late April and early May, creating something properly magical.

It's a straightforward woodland walk through mature trees, nothing extreme. You're not scrambling over roots or trudging through mud for hours - just gentle ambling between the bluebells, with the occasional bird sound and the smell of damp earth. The walk takes maybe an hour or so depending on how often you stop to actually look at things rather than photograph them for Instagram.

Families with young legs will enjoy it fine, though don't expect climbing frames or play areas. It's really for people who want a quiet morning in nature without the pretension of some visitor centres. Dog walkers, photographers, and anyone after a proper dose of the South Downs come here regularly.

Timing is crucial - peak bloom is usually mid-to-late April, though it varies. Go midweek if you can, because weekends get busy. Admission and access details aren't widely advertised online, so arrive expecting it might be free, but bring a few quid just in case.

If you're based at South Downs Caravan Park or any of the surrounding sites, it's a natural morning stop before heading into Arundel itself for lunch. You won't spend all day here, but you'll leave having seen something genuinely lovely.
